Egyptologists have put different theories regarding the construction Pyramids. Earlier it was thought that the slaves were used to build the pyramids. But now the curtain has been drawn from this belief and many aspect related to pyramid construction has been revealed.
In reality the peasants or the manual laborer's in large numbers used to work under, the architects, engineers, master builders, stone masons, artisans and scribes. The pyramids built at an earlier stage were nowhere similar to those which are associated with Egyptian Pyramids.
All these people together used their skills to create a colossal structure. The construction involved laying of stones horizontally and not like earlier pyramids were the blocks were leaned inwards, Eventually giving tremendous strength to the pyramid.
The blocks were placed in such a way that it used to taper at the top. As far as hauling of the large blocks up ramps is concerned oxen were used. Initially it was believed that solid blocks were used for the construction. Now the more research and exhaustive study has revealed that many a times sand and rubble were used to fill in the gaps which were surrounded by the solid stone.
The earliest period pyramid, that is the third and the fourth dynasty were entirely made of stone , with the main body of granite and outer casing of limestone. The fifth dynasty pyramids involved cheap quality limestone for its entire construction. The Middle Kingdom Pyramids were made of mudbricks encased in the veneer of polished limestone. Last but not the least the later pyramids were built on the mountains which reduced the quantity of material required for construction.
